About the Area

Flamborough is an ideal base from which to explore the local area. There are a wealth of activities and the following are worth a visit if you have the time!

Flamborough Head Lighthouse: located 1.2 miles from the village centre, the lighthouse was built in 1806 to mark out the headland for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic heading for the ports of Bridlington and Scarborough. In 1940 the lighthouse was electrified, and subsequent developments meant that the last keepers left the lighthouse in 1996 and the lighthouse itself is monitored from Harwich, Essex. Tours of the lighthouse can be booked via the Flamborough Head Lighthouse Visitor Centre: https://www.trinityhouse.co.uk/lighthouse-visitor-centres/flamborough-lighthouse-visitor-centre

Flamborough chalk cliffs have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The unique headland that points out into the North Sea is an extension of the Yorkshire Wolds and the most northerly outcrop of chalk in Europe (East Riding Coast and Countryside, 2024).

The area boasts many unique features and one of these is the number of cave networks and habitats. The wave action of the North Sea over time has helped to create over 300 caves, and these are extremely important due to the species that inhabit them. Visitors are welcome to the site, but ensure that you follow the rules regarding this as set out in the leaflet link below, which also provides more information about the site, how to access and visit etc., can be found here: https://downloads.eastriding.org.uk/directories/culture-venues-coastcountryside/docs/flamborough-outer-leaflet.pdf

Bempton Cliffs are home to one of the UK’s top wildlife spectacles. Between March and August each year, over a million seabirds gather to raise a family on the chalk cliffs that overlook the North Sea. RSPB Bempton is part of the Headland at Flamborough and during this busy period, you can expect to see the following visitors: Puffins, Gannets, Kittiwakes and Guillemots are amongst those nesting on the chalk cliffs.
